Fuel Prices Go Up, Traffic-related Deaths Go Down

Posted on Aug 18, 2009

The skyrocketing gasoline prices that consumers are paying at the gas pump are having a noteable positive effect: traffic related injuries and deaths are declining sharply across the United States.

Early figures compiled by the National Safety Council confirm that higher fuel costs are having a dramatic effect on the number of people travelling on the nation's roads causing a significant drop in automobile accidents.    The result is a substantial decrease in auto related injuries and deaths.  Not only are there fewer drivers o nthe road, but drivers may be driving at slower speeds in an effort to conserve fueld and increase efficiency.

Indiana has experienced a 26% reduction in fatal accidents so far in 2008.  If the downward trend continues, 2008 could have the lowest level of fatalities since records began being kept 18 years ago.
